Trees

Press Conference - First TreeHere is a photo of the first tree planted in the NbNW Target Area on 5th Avenue close to West Broad Street. People parking near Sim’s or Service Tire will benefit from the shade for their car!  Many more trees will be coming in the fall. 2nd Avenue, 3rd Avenue and 5th Avenues on the West Side will be blanketed with trees. On the North Side it’s Fairview Street and Goepp Street getting the bulk of the trees but also some trees on High, Center, New and Union. Our goal is to fill the NbNW Target District with trees over the next 5 years.

Great care was taken in selecting species suitable to each location. The Penn State Extension Forester visited each address and selected the species based on what sort of sidewalk space exists for the tree, whether there are wires overhead, what direction the property faced, what other trees were in the immediate area and how much room there was for the tree when it matures.

There is a program coming to our area called TreeVitalize and Tree Tenders where volunteers can help take care of these urban trees. More info coming soon on that. If you are interested, please contact the city urban forester.

Bethlehem has a new Urban Forester who started this spring. Lucinda Smith is the City’s Urban Forester, supported in part through the North by Northwest program.  If you have tree related questions, please call Cindy at 610-865-7050 or email to lsmith@bethlehem-pa.gov
