Hometown Streets Project

Hometown Streets is a PennDot program. Bethlehem received a $250,000 grant to work on West Broad Street from 1st Avenue to 3rd Avenue and down 3rd Avenue to the Route 378 interchange.

The project could include streetlights, street trees, , crosswalk work at 3rd Avenue and West Broad, maybe benches and banners, trash and recycling containers, gateway enhancements at the 378 interchange etc.

$250,000 does not go far in a streetscape enhancement project. Here are some figures with cost estimates per block for various features:

  • Historic-style street lights - $100,000 per block
  • Plain concrete sidewalks and curbs - $225,000 per block
  • Decorative paving between plain sidewalks and curbs - $250,000 per block
  • Street Trees - $15,000 per block
  • Landscaped tree wells and/or planting areas - $12-24,000 per block
  • Decorative Crosswalks - $25,000 per intersection
